this 1889 Antique
Rail Pass #587 issued by The New York, New Haven & Hartford Railroad Company
to W.B. Bevill, General Passenger Agent for the Norfolk & Western Railroad (N&WRR).
The rail pass is signed by the NYNH&H's General Superintendent. Beautiful handwriting! At the bottom left the card is imprinted: John A. Lowell & Co.
According to an on-line biography taken from the 1906 Railway Officials in America, "Walter B. Bevill was born on
Feb. 21, 1856, at Richmond, Va. Entered railway service May 31, 1873, as clerk in general freight agent's office Richmond & Danville Rd, since, which he has been consecutively Nov. 1875 to Sept 15, 1880, in general passenger agent's office same road; Sept. 15, 1880, to Oct. 1, 1882, chief clerk to general passenger agent Associated Railways of Virginia and the Carolinas (Piedmont Air Line, Atlantic Coast Line, etc.); Oct. 1882 to March 1886, chief clerk to general passenger agent Virginia Tennessee & Georgia Air Line (Norfolk & Western, Shenandoah Valley and East Tennessee Virginia & Georgia Rds); March 1886 to date, general passenger agent Norfolk & Western Rd and its successor, the Norfolk & Western Ry."
