The History: The 1st Infantry Division was a regular Army division, and was stationed at Fort Devens, Massachusetts when the war started. They embarked for the European Theater in August of 1942 and their first action came when they landed in
North Africa
as part of Operation Torch, on November 8, 1942. They fought across North Africa and participated in battles at Maktar,
Kasserine
Pass
, Gafsa, El Guettar, Beja and Mateur until
Tunisia
was secured. The 1st was the first division to land on the beaches od
Sicily
and fought many battles over the mountains until
Messina
was secured. Their next battle came on June 6, 1944 when the 1st Infantry spearheaded the attack on
Omaha
Beach
. They were credited with overcoming all obstacles and destroying the German 352nd Infantry Division. In July, the 1st led the drive that opened the Cotentin Peninuula to
Brittany
. They next drove across
France
and helped capture the
German
City
of
Aachen
on October 21, 1944. They then attacked into the
Huertgen
Forest
and reached the
Roer
River
before receiving a period of rest. This rest was cut short when the Big Red One was rushed into the Ardennes to stop the German attack in the
Battle
of the Bulge. After the Bulge, the 1st went on the offensive, breached the Siegfried Line, reached the
Roer
River
, crossed the
Roer
River
, then crossed the
Rhine
River
at Remagen. The Division raced across
Germany
and Crossed the Harz Mountains into
Czechoslovakia
. They were there when the war in
Europe
ended.
