The ancient Celtic Amulet " The Wheel of Life " or "Taranis Wheel", the Celts attributed this sign to the three sides of different worlds: the Afterlife of the Dead, the World of the living, and the World of Gods and Divine Creatures. The symbol of the wheel of life among the Celts was often used in various rituals and with the symbol " Triskele " as well. The wheel of life and the " Triskele " were the main symbols in Celtic beliefs. Amulet symbolized four great elements: Earth, Air, Fire and Water. In Celtic mythology Taranis was the god of thunder worshipped primarily in Gaul, Gallaecia, the British Isles, but also in the Rhineland and Danube regions, amongst others. Taranis, along with Esus and Toutatis as part of a sacred triad, was mentioned by the Roman poet Lucan in his epic poem Pharsalia as a Celtic deity to whom human sacrificial offerings were made.
Taranis was associated, as was the cyclops Brontes ("thunder") in Greek mythology, with the wheel.
The ancient Celts were a widespread group of tribes whose rich culture has been identified through burials, artifacts and language. To modern ears, the word “Celtic” evokes traditional art, literature and music from Ireland and Scotland. But the ancient Celts were a widespread group of people with origins in central Europe.
The spoked wheel symbol is one of the oldest symbols of civilization. This symbol is present on ancient monuments around the world: in Mesopotamia, India, Central and South America, Gaul, Scandinavia, Ancient Rome, Byzantium, Russia, Mongolia, etc.
Initially (like many other symbols), the wheel is an attribute of the Gods, as, for example, the wheel of the Celtic god of thunder Taranis. Amulet Wheel - this symbol is diverse and contains more than one meaning. On the one hand, this amulet symbolizes the cyclical nature of everything in the world - life ends with death, and with death a new life begins. On the other hand, this amulet has another meaning, it symbolizes the inconstancy of good luck, as well as the fact that there will always be a rise after the decline.
The wheel is also a symbol of the cyclical movement of celestial bodies and natural cycles, as well as a calendar symbol. The symbolism of the wheel is also associated with ideas about the changeability of fate, luck, power, just as the spoke of a wheel, when it rotates, turns out to be above and below. The medieval concept of "Wheel of Fortune" is connected with these ideas.
