Description
The Patch:This Auction is for 1 WWII Vintage I Marine Amphibious Corps Aviation Engineer patch embroidered on twill with a white back. This twill variation is smaller than a fully embroidered patch.
This patch is in good condition. It has a very nice white backing. This patch does not glow under the UV light and is guaranteed to be authentic.
The History: The First Marine Amphibious Corps (I MAC) was established on October 1
st
, 1942 and arrived in the South Pacific to begin coordinating plans for the attack on
Guadalcanal
. In June, I MAC components opened the New Georgia Campaign at
Viru
Harbor
, Bangunu and on
Rendova
Island
. They landed on Vella La Vella during this campaign. The next campaign run by I MAC was
Bougainville
, which began on October 27, 1943. By the end of this campaign, early 1944, the First Marine Amphibious Corps had isolated the remaining Japanese forces in the
Solomon Islands
. Corps elements next landed in the
Green
Islands
and established fighter bases which could reach the
Bismarck Archipelago
. I MAC then landed in the
Bismarck Archipelago
and established bases on Emirau and other islands in the St. Matthias Group. On April 15, 1944, the support elements of I MAC were transferred to Administrative Command and the tactical elements were redesignated III Amphibious Corps.
Two Aviation Engineer Battalions were assigned to I MAC. The 1
st
arrived at
Noumea
,
New Caledonia
in September of 1942 and was attached to the 1
st
Marine Aircraft Wing. It participated in the capture and defense of
Guadalcanal
from October 10, 1942 through February 8, 1943. In April of 1944, the battalion was assigned to III Amphibious Corps. The 2
nd
Battalion was assigned to I MAC in October of 1942. It landed on
Guadalcanal
on January 31, 1943 and worked on Koli Bomber I and II airfields as well as several other engineering projects. It was transferred to III Amphibious Corps before it left for
Guam
.
