Late Roman Sword & Leather Covered SheathBattle Ready For Re-enactment & Costume
This Roman ceremonial sword is very different from the classic gladius used by Roman legionaries, but it is actually based on a historical prototype. On the corner of the cathedral at Porta della Carta in Venice, there is a statue portraying the Tetrarchs: late Roman Emperor Diocletian and his three co-regents Galerius, Constantius and Maximian. The four rulers look alike and each one is carrying a short sword with a symbolic eagle head in his left hand.
Our ceremonial sword with an eagle head pommel and rectangular hand guard of solid brass is based on this sculpture. This sword with a wooden grip painted warm brown was probably reserved for the ruling class. It also features a single-edged blade.
Our Roman ceremonial sword comes with a leather scabbard decorated with elaborate brass fittings.
