CERTIFICATE APRIL 2,1842.
OUTER CERTIFICATE DIMENSIONS: 14 1/8" X 18"
OUTER FRAME DIMENSIONS: 18" X 22"
CONDITION OF THE CERTIFICATE IS VERY GOOD OVERALL WITH CRACKS FOLDS AND CHIPS MOSTLY AROUND THE EDGES. BLACK PRINT IS STILL STRONG. HINGED WITH CLEAR TAPE IN SEVERAL SPOTS ON THE REVERSE TO A CANVAS BOARD AND FRAMED FOR CONSERVATION TO PREVENT ANY DEGRADATION AND FOR DISPLAY.

PAPER YELLOWING AND SOMEWHAT BRITTLE AS IS USUAL WITH PAPER FROM THIS ERA SINCE THE PAPERS CONTAINED A HIGH PH FACTOR MAKING ANY THAT SURVIVING QUITE SCARCE IN ANY CONDITION.
This beautiful Fireman Appointment certificate is from the City of New York (Manhattan) issued in 1842 to Fireman William H. Halsey. This historic document was engraved by George W. Hatch , printed in New York and has two vignettes. The top vignette shows the Greek Goddess Iris carrying a
Caduceus
linking the gods to
humanity
wearing a crown handing Neptune the Keys to the city and another woman handing a mother holding her child a contribution to the Fire Department Fund on the shore with Manhattan harbor in the background. The bottom vignette shows an early fire water wagon of the old Volunteer Engine Company Clinton No. 41 .
At the center bottom of the vignette the motto : Protection and Benevolence.
This item has the original signatures of the Treasurer of the Fire Department " John S. Giles and and the The Clerk of the Company's Council: Sam J. Willis.
