?This is an ORIGINAL and RARE Kiska Task Force shoulder sleeve insignia, as worn in Operation COTTAGE in August, 1943.  The operation was conducted to retake the Island of Kiska in the Aleutian Island chain, which had been invaded by the Japanese simultaneously with the Battle of Midway in June, 1942. The allied invasion force was composed of the US 7th Infantry Division, 87th Mountain Infantry Regiment and the First Special Service Force (the "Devil's Brigade).  The Canadian 13th Brigade was in the operation as well, several of whose members are shown in the image above wearing the patch. The Japanese, however, had already evacuated the island sometime before and Kiska was retaken without opposition, aside from a nasty "friendly-fire" incident with the Canadian troops.
There were two types of insignia worn: (1) A patch printed on a light canvas-like material; and (2) A fully-embroidered patch of the standard type, both of which are currently listed on eBay.  This listing is for the fully-embroidered type.  I purchased this patch on July 22, 1990 at the late, great Manion's International Auction and it has remained in my collection since that time.  The patch is in VERY GOOD used condition and shows obvious signs of having actually been worn in the Operation COTTAGE with slight soiling and signs on the edge of having been sewn to a field jacket and subsequently removed as a souvenir.  The patch is 2.5" in diameter.  Unfortunately, the patch came from Manion's Auction without provenance.
