Description

Ancient Greece, Islands of Thrace, Thasos.  after 148BC, silver tetradrachm, large planchet, 32 mm, 15.9 gm. Obverse: portrait of young Dionysos, Reverse: Heracles standing, holding club and lion skin. Excellent example of this Thrace type, which started in finer style and gradually became more barbarized over a century, this being intermediate in the progression. Nice bold specimen, very slight porosity as often seen. These have sold quite high on Heritage Auctions lately.
